Why Do People Choose Delta-8 THC Over Medical Cannabis?
As laws have changed, so has the cannabis/hemp market. After the 2018 Farm Bill passed, a new cannabinoid took center stage across the nation. That very cannabinoid is Delta-8 THC. Commonly known as Delta-8, it has gained popularity among those seeking an alternative to medical cannabis.
However, why are people choosing Delta-8 over medical cannabis? What sets it apart from other options on the market? Today, we at Leafy8 are discussing why people make this decision, as well as what could make Delta-8 more appealing than other compounds.
What is Delta-8 THC?
Delta-8 THC is a cannabinoid that the cannabis and hemp plants naturally produce. This compound is chemically similar to Delta-9 THC. Delta-9 is one of the primary cannabinoids responsible for the psychoactive properties of cannabis. Despite being chemically alike, the two have different structures, which change their effects and legal status (in the United States).
Delta-8 grows in small concentrations on the plant. Until recently, it was un-extractable. However, due to recent advancements, Delta-8 THC can now be processed into gummies, vape cartridges, and many other products. Compared to traditional cannabis, these products can offer a milder, more controlled experience and can be dosed with pinpoint accuracy.
Reasons to Choose Delta-8 Over Medical Cannabis
Legal Status
Due to its legal status, many choose to take Delta-8. Other compounds, like Delta-9 THC, are prohibited or restricted to medical use only in many states. After the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, Delta-8 derived from hemp has been legal to purchase without having to jump through hoops as long as the buyer is 21 years of age or older.
The Farm Bill states that all products must contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Aside from this stipulation, this law has made Delta-8 products widely available. At the time of this writing, 26 states allow the sale and use of Delta-8 THC without restrictions. In regions where cannabis laws are strict, these products have become increasingly appealing.
Milder, More Controlled Experiences
Delta-8 provides users with a milder experience than Delta-9 THC. Many prefer this, as they want to avoid the intense experience associated with traditional cannabis. Delta-8’s effects are often described as pleasant, uplifting, and focused on relaxation instead of stimulation.
Because it does not have the same intensity as Delta-9, those who are new to cannabis or are managing symptoms choose Delta-8.
Results from a study published on January 4th, 2022 indicate several themes from users when asked open-ended questions about Delta-8 THC:
- “Delta 8 feels like Delta 9’s nicer younger sibling”; “It has all the positives and many fewer drawbacks/side effects. It is less impairing and much less likely to cause anxiety or paranoia”.
- “It is like “lite” Delta 9. I can focus and work more with Delta 8 than Delta 9. It helps my pains and relaxation and I feel more able. Depending on the strain it has taken the place of melatonin for sleep.”
- “It seems a lot more of a ‘functional’ high, at my job we call it work-weed. I get too much anxiety to effectively deal with customers on Delta 9, Delta 8 is just about perfect for when you gotta actually do things. I still do prefer Delta-9 after a long day though.”
- “How Delta 8 is consumed plays a large role in the effects, when eaten or taken in a tincture it feels much closer to Delta 9 in effects compared to when vaping/dabbing Delta 8.”
Based on these responses, we can conclude that Delta-8 THC produces a milder experience overall than Delta-9 THC and is greatly preferred as a functional alternative to traditional cannabis.
However, it can be more potent when eaten. This is because Delta-8 shares many of the same active metabolites as Delta-9 THC. Delta-8 and Delta-9 are converted to 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent compound, more readily when consumed orally.
Fewer Side Effects
While all products can have side effects, users have claimed to experience fewer adverse effects when using Delta-8 than Delta-9 THC. Having about two-thirds the potency of Delta-9 THC, Many reported that Delta-8 produces less paranoia and anxiety.
All products, cannabis-related or not, can have side effects. Although, Delta-8 users have said they experience fewer aversions when using Delta-8 than Delta-9. Experiences with delta-8-THC were characterized as less intense and lasted a shorter duration than those with delta-9-THC.
When polled in an anonymous study, users reported:
- “With Delta 8, I am able to perform my normal day-to-day activities, i.e., no couch lock, paranoia, munchies. I am able to function well at work under the influence of Delta 8 whereas under the influence on Delta 9 at work, I am paranoid and feel less motivated to do work activities.”
- “Delta 8 has more of just a euphoria feeling than any other feeling for me. I want to do activities and I want to have a pleasurable time. Whereas if I have too much of Delta 9, all I want to do is watch TV, eat snacks, and distance myself from the outside world. Delta 9 is better for sleep.”
Unlike Delta-8, Delta-9 THC is well-known for its high potency and powerful effects. When taking a compound like this, one is bound to experience more side effects. Do not get us wrong. Some enjoy the intensity, but Delta-8 can be ideal for those who want a casual experience or wish to use it therapeutically.
Countless Different Preparations
Delta-8 products can be consumed in various methods, from vape cartridges to flowers to edibles. And in those forms, the potential strains and flavor combinations are seemingly endless. These products can be purchased without a medical card, and they can be easier to dose and consume compared to medical marijuana.
The wide variety of Delta-8 products makes them accessible to more people. Since Delta-8 is less potent, the barrier to entry for someone just starting is lower than most Delta-9 THC products.
No Medical Card Required
Many choose Delta-8 over medical cannabis because they do not need a medical card to get started. Medical Cards can be costly, with the application itself being $75. Once someone gets approved for one, they must have a consultation every seven months to renew the prescription. These consultations will cost $99 to $350. Pricing can vary depending on the state and doctor chosen.
It can be expensive to maintain and keep a medical card. Unfortunately, this can make medical cannabis inaccessible to those on lower incomes or following a tight budget. However, do not worry. Anyone 21 years of age or older can purchase Delta-8 THC products with an ID present, depending on the state they live in. Thank you, 2018 Farm Bill.
Delta-8 is a much more accessible option in comparison to medical cannabis. We can buy products and not worry about hidden fees or additional investment.
So, Why Delta-8 THC?
Delta-8 THC has become a unique alternative to medical cannabis, as it is more widely available, has milder psychoactive effects, tends to produce fewer undesired side effects, and can be found in a variety of different formulations. Many find this compound to be the more compelling option.
It is crucial to note that Delta-8 may affect each individual differently. Many factors, such as age, health, metabolism, and weight, play into it. When choosing between Delta-8 and medical cannabis, remember it depends on your needs and preferences.
As with any substance, we recommend enjoying Delta-8 THC responsibly, especially if you are new to cannabinoids or have underlying health conditions. Consult a physician before consuming any cannabis product.
