With the legalization of cannabis and hemp-derived THC, many have started incorporating THC into their daily lives, even at the gym. This phenomenon is turning the THC stereotype on its head. Typically people associate THC with “couch-lock” and sedation but this recent trend is proving otherwise. We are exploring the scientific evidence, surveys, and what THC can do for you. Whether you just need a boost to get through your workout or are looking for a happier time at the gym, THC may just be the thing for you.

THC in Workout Routine: Why?

With over half the United States having access to CBD and THC, Researchers have become increasingly interested in the connection between Cannabis and exercise. Many are curious about how this plant can influence and affect different aspects of our lives when implemented in small doses.

In recent years, athletes and casual gym-goers who use THC have reported better workouts and faster recovery. A survey by J Cannabis Res in 2023 found that” Ninety-three percent of participants felt that CBD use assisted them with recovery from exercise, while 87% of participants felt the same regarding THC use.” This survey consisted of 111 people, meaning 97 people found that THC helped them with their workouts. This survey also found that 30% of participants used edibles, 27% used vaping, and 25% used smokables. The remaining 18% was spread across tinctures and topicals.

In a different study conducted by Sports Medicine, they tested runners’ exercise with and without THC and found an increase in enjoyment when THC was used before exercise. However, they also found the runners experienced more exertion afterward, likely due to THC raising your heart rate.

Fact or Fiction?

You may be wondering, is there any actual science to this? Due to the lack of research, it’s not a conclusive answer.

As of right now, there is one main theory as to why there’s a positive correlation between exercise and THC.

That theory is that it is all psychological. A common report amongst the studies and surveys is that users found more enjoyment when taking THC before exercise. It’s theorized that it is instead of aiding in exercise, creating positive feedback for the person and incentivizing them to do the activity more.

There hasn’t been a significant amount of evidence that shows THC enhances someone’s athletic abilities. In a study done by the University of Colorado Boulder, they reported, “…while runners felt more enjoyment under the influence of cannabis, they ran 31 seconds per mile slower.” This statement highlights that while the runners enjoyed their exercise more, they ran slower than normal. THC is not a performance-enhancing substance.

This is not to say it isn’t helpful. Sometimes, people need a little push to start getting into better habits. For casual gym-goers who aren’t looking for intense workouts, perhaps THC is a way to help enjoy your workouts a little more.

That being said, always enjoy responsibly when using THC. Because it impairs your motor skills, it can be dangerous to do certain workouts. For example, we do not recommend heavy weight lifting as your coordination is impaired. Always enjoy THC in a safe environment with people you trust.

To avoid this, CBD has similar effects on exercise as THC, without the impairment. In the same University of Colorado Boulder study, they reported the following. “Surprisingly, this heightened mood was even greater in the CBD group than in the THC group, suggesting athletes may be able to get some of the benefits to mood without the impairment that can come with THC.” While CBD has no psychoactive effects, it can be just the boost you need to jumpstart your workouts.

Incorporating THC in Your Workout

If you’re looking for a way to boost your workouts or incentivize yourself to go to the gym, THC may be just the thing you need.

The most popular methods for working out are edibles, vapes, and smokables. Each method has its own pros and cons. For example, edibles take a while to kick in but tend to last a few hours, so they may not be typical if you commute to the gym. Below is a comprehensive list of what each method entails.

Smoking

Smoking is one of the most common and oldest methods of consuming hemp. It has been a staple in the cannabis community for decades.

Quick Onset:

Users can feel the fast onset of effects from smoking Delta-8 THC in a matter of seconds to minutes.

Duration:

Smoking tends to last 1 to 3 hours, which is on the lower end of the spectrum. This duration is more ideal for working out, as workouts typically last 45 to 60 minutes.

Affordability:

Smoking devices like pipes and rolling papers are more cost-friendly than high-quality vaporizers. This low-risk investment makes smoking an accessible option for those on a budget.

Variety:

Smoking allows people to enjoy a broader range of products. This selection includes joints, blunts, and various glassware options. With many different ways to smoke, many people wonder what these methods entail and the differences. This article explores several products and their pros and cons.

Vaping

Vaping has rapidly gained popularity among hemp users in recent years.

Health Considerations:

Since its creation, Vaping has been considered a less harmful substitution for smoking*. This idea stems from the fact that it doesn’t involve combustion. Combustion is what produces the harmful tar and carcinogens found in smoke. As a result, it may be gentler on the lungs.*

Duration:

Similar to smoking, vaping can last 1 to 3 hours. Depending on the number of hits and the draw’s length, this duration may vary.

Precision and Control:

Vaporizers allow for precise control over dosage, which makes it easier for people to manage their intake. Users with medical issues may find it crucial as they may need specific levels for their conditions.

Flavor Profile:

Since it doesn’t involve combustion, vaping preserves the strain flavor better than smoking. These flavors can make the experience more enjoyable for users who appreciate the tastes and aromas of different cannabis strains.

Edibles

Edibles are a classic, and long-lasting method that gives users a wide variety to choose from.

Long Lasting:

You can feel the effects of edibles for up to several hours after their onset, which can take 30 minutes to an hour. This makes them favorable for those looking for a long experience, but can be a hazard if you are commuting to the gym.

Wide Variety:

Edibles can be made from any recipe using oil or butter, allowing for various baked goods and candies to be consumed in this form.

Discreetness:

Edibles are discreet, unlike other methods that produce an odor. They can be taken anywhere (Do so at your discretion) without drawing attention. Its discreetness makes it perfect for those wanting to keep their consumption private.

No Respiratory Risk:

With ingestion, there is no risk of respiratory problems. For those with past lung problems or future concerns, edibles may be a safer option.

THC Can Be A Great Motivator

Ultimately, whether you choose to incorporate THC into your workout or explore alternative options like CBD, it’s important to enjoy responsibly and with awareness of individual needs and limitations. By understanding the different methods of consumption and their benefits and considerations, you can make informed decisions that align with your fitness goals and overall well-being.
