Vapes have completely changed how people are consuming cannabis. Since their rise to popularity in 2014, they have become a fan favorite for their discretion and convenience. While popularized by big tobacco companies, vapes offer cannabis consumers a way to enjoy THC without all the prep work.

With the press of a button, you can heat the oil in the vape to 315-465°F in a matter of seconds. Some even let you set a specific temperature and wattage for maximum control over your experience.

Breaking Down the Vape Pen

Mouthpiece

Commonly known as a “drip tip”, the mouthpiece is used to inhale the vapor from the cartridge. Typically, mouthpieces are made of plastic, but they can be made of various materials such as metal

Depending on the shape and size, this piece can influence the taste and temperature. The mouthpiece is typically removable and replaceable to allow for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Cartridge

The cartridge or tank is the component that holds the cannabis oil. This piece needs to be taken care of carefully because it is typically made of glass and can shatter if mishandled. The terms “cartridge” and “tank” may be used interchangeably, but they have distinct differences.

A cartridge is typically pre-filled, and a tank is a refillable unit. For tanks, there is normally a fill line to optimize the vaping experience and prevent leaking/overflowing.

Atomizer

The atomizer is referred to as the “heart of the vape”. Atomizer refers to the heating element contained in a steel or ceramic container.

There are three different types of atomizers. Cotton Wick, Quartz, and Ceramic. Each comes with its pros and cons.

  • Cotton Wick: As the name suggests, a wire coil wraps around a cotton wick saturated with cannabis oil. This wick is more likely to burn, leading to a burnt taste and necessitating more frequent replacements.
  • Ceramic Coil: Wrapped around a ceramic base, these coils are better for high voltage and can retain heat more effectively.
  • Quartz Coil: Quartz coils are known for their rapid heating, but do not retain heat as well as ceramic coils.

Breaking Down the Battery

Thread

The threads refer to how a cartridge/tank connects to a battery. Without this, there would be no way to connect the two components, so take care of this piece.

Power Button

There are two types of vape pens: Draw-activated and button-controlled. Five clicks on the power button will turn it on and activate the atomizer. This button can also control the temperature depending on the amount of clicks. It is important to be aware of the button when traveling, as accidental activation will lead to the deterioration of the battery and the cartridge itself.

Draw-activated vapes don’t share this issue, as they turn on as soon as air is pulled through the mouthpiece

Indicator Light

On a Leafy8 Battery, the LED indicator is around the power button. When you press it five times, several possible colors will appear. A blinking green indication means it’s charged and ready to use. While heating, the indicator changes colors and turns off once it has been heated. If your battery is flashing red, it needs charging.

Battery

The battery is the most important part of the vape as it provides the power to the atomizer. The most common battery is lithium-ion, used in cellphones and electronic cars.

Batteries typically come with a charger that screws into the top. These batteries resemble a flash drive. They can be plugged into a USB outlet, a charging block, or a computer. For the best result, we recommend using an outlet, as opposed to a computer.

Care for a Vape Pen

It is important to take care of your vape pen so that it lasts for a long time. We have some easy ways to extend the life of your vape!

  • Keep Upright

Always keep your vape cartridge upright. If it lays on its side for a long period, it can be prone to leaking from the top. Being on its side can also allow dust to get inside the mouthpiece.

  • Keep at Room Temperature

Keeping your vape pen at room temperature is always a good idea. When exposed to high temperatures, it can cause the cart to leak, and at extreme levels, the THC can deteriorate. Heat will also damage the battery.

  • Always Transport Responsibly

If you have a button-activated vape, always travel with it secured. As mentioned before, accidental activation can lead to the deterioration of the oil and battery.
